Modern caravans are designed to provide electricity, making these houses on wheels very comfortable and convenient for travelling. However, with all the circuitry and wiring, breakdowns can be a common occurrence, whereas regular maintenance is important. Hence it is important to understand the basics of the electrical system in your caravan.

Like the conventional electrical system, the fuse in a caravan is a small metal wire that gets heated and blows up when excessive current flows through the circuit, helping save the device. If the fuse blows up, you will need to replace it.

The fuses in a caravan power various devices. These may include lights, stereos, and other electric appliances. The circuit breakers in the caravan protect the supply cable; however, as they are intended to cope with the electricity load, they may not respond quickly and safeguard the appliance. It is why the connected appliance must also have an adequately rated fuse.

Regular fuses are quite cheap and come in various types, including relay fuses, glass barrels, or automotive fuses. There is a filament inside the fuse that burns up and stops the current flow

for the automotive and glass barrel fuses.

Relay fuses are automatic fuses that trip when overheated due to excessive current and stop the current flow. Once the fuse cools down, it turns back on. The fuse may continue to repeat the pattern if not fixed or until it burns out.

  • Test the new fuse and the electrical appliance that corresponds with it. Make sure to check the right and left sides of the fuse with a test light and see that the light in the handles comes on.
  • Now plug your appliance back in and turn it on to see if it works. If yes, it means that you have successfully replaced the fuse. If not, you may need to see for any other problem.
